System thinking in system engineering

Overview

Aims: The purpose of the assessment is to reflect on the systems methods and tools presented during the module, and explored in the formative Group Exercises, and explore the underlying principles that enable the selection of combinations of methods that lead to a foundation of understanding for subsequent stages in Systems Engineering

Intended learning outcomes: On successful completion of the module, the student will be able to:

  • Evaluate the appropriateness of Enterprise modelling and SE tools and methods to an example problem space
  • Evaluate the challenges of remote group working and other aspects of the professional practice of SE in the conduct of problem analysis and concept definition life cycle processes

Description of task(s) to be completed: During the module, you studied different methods for both soft and hard modelling and took part in formative group exercises which allowed you to explore how models can be used in conjunction with one another to holistically represent a problem space and derive a suitable logical solution. Please now reflect on this experience, and evaluate, with examples, the extent to which you think models can be successfully used together to fully encompass a problem space and underpin initial logical architecture/solution representation.

In your work, include one original new model that you have created for the assignment, from the several types seen in class.

Marks will be gained for the following aspects:

-A personal reflection on the group exercises: what did you think went well, what went badly, and why? (1,000 words, 25%)

-

-A personal assessment of how hard and soft models may – or may not – complement each other to improve problem and solution understanding (2,000 words, 50%)

-Creation of supporting examples and a new model to support your answers to the above questions (25%)
