Overview
Chapter 1 has now been completed and revised based on previous feedback. Before starting Chapter 2, I would like you to review Chapter 1 and ensure Chapter 2 is fully aligned with the research aim, research questions, objectives, methodology, and identified research gap.
The thesis topic is:
"Evaluating Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) for Improving Stakeholder Requirements Traceability in Defence Research and Development Projects"
For Chapter 2, I would like a high-quality critical literature review written at master's distinction level. Please avoid repeating material already covered in Chapter 1. Chapter 1 should remain an introduction and background chapter, while Chapter 2 should provide the detailed critical analysis of the literature.
Please feel free to improve or adjust the proposed structure if you believe a stronger academic structure would better support the research objectives and final thesis quality.
Target Chapter Length:
Approximately 28 to 35 pages.
Target References:
60 to 90 references.
Reference Quality: • Around 70% peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers. • Around 15% standards and professional guidance (INCOSE, ISO, SEBoK, DoD Digital Engineering, etc.). • Around 10% books and handbooks. • Maximum 5% other sources.
Proposed Chapter Structure:
2.1 Introduction
2.2 Defence Research and Development Environment 2.2.1 Characteristics of Defence R&D 2.2.2 Complexity of Modern Defence Systems 2.2.3 Defence Digital Engineering
2.3 Stakeholder Requirements in Defence Systems 2.3.1 Stakeholder Theory 2.3.2 Stakeholder Requirements 2.3.3 Requirements Elicitation 2.3.4 Stakeholder Challenges in Defence
2.4 Requirements Traceability 2.4.1 Definition of Requirements Traceability 2.4.2 Traceability Models 2.4.3 Forward and Backward Traceability 2.4.4 Vertical and Horizontal Traceability 2.4.5 Benefits of Traceability 2.4.6 Traceability Challenges 2.4.7 Requirements Traceability in Defence Systems
2.5 Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) 2.5.1 Evolution of MBSE 2.5.2 MBSE Principles 2.5.3 SysML and MBSE 2.5.4 Benefits of MBSE 2.5.5 MBSE Challenges 2.5.6 MBSE in Defence
2.6 MBSE for Stakeholder Requirements Traceability 2.6.1 Traceability Through Models 2.6.2 Requirements Allocation and Relationships 2.6.3 Verification and Validation Traceability 2.6.4 Lifecycle Traceability 2.6.5 Critical Evaluation of Existing Research
2.7 Literature Synthesis and Research Gap Include a synthesis table comparing authors, findings, limitations, and relevance to the research topic. Clearly identify the remaining research gaps and justify the need for this study.
2.8 Conceptual Framework Develop and justify the conceptual framework that will guide the research and framework development.
2.9 Chapter Summary
Most importantly, I would like the chapter to be analytical rather than descriptive. Please critically compare studies, identify agreements and disagreements in the literature, discuss limitations of previous work, and build a strong justification for the research gap and proposed framework. The strongest emphasis should be placed on Requirements Traceability, MBSE, and the relationship between them within Defence R&D environments, as these are the core focus areas of the thesis.
Please use your academic judgement to strengthen the chapter wherever necessary and ensure it is suitable for distinction-level master's research.
This message gives clear direction while still allowing the tutor enough freedom to improve the structure and produce a stronger Chapter 2.
