Solid Waste Management

Overview

Part 1 (Solid Waste Management)

Discuss separation processes. Which separation processes are most familiar to you? Have you visited a materials recovery facility (MRF)? Does your community have an MRF? How does (or would) your community benefit from an MRF?

Your journal entry must be at least 200 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

Part 2 (Solid Waste Management)

Discuss how biological solid waste processes benefit or could benefit your community. Do you compost organic waste, such as food waste? Does your community collect the organic portion of your solid waste separately from the rest of your solid waste? Do you favor aerobic or anaerobic processes? Why, or why not?

Part 3 (Toxicology)

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the world. COVID-19 is a virus that can be easily transmitted from person to person. Reflect on what you know about the symptoms and effects of COVID-19 on the respiratory system, what you have observed during the midst of the pandemic, and the long-term effects of COVID-19. Imagine individuals who work in areas that have aerosol toxicants. Address the following.

  • What concerns might there be with these individuals and other individuals who have preexisting respiratory concerns and their exposure to workplace toxicants?
  • Do you think there would be a benefit for these individuals to report their pre-existing conditions to their manager?
  • Do you think it should be legal to require employees to do so?

Explain your thoughts about this situation and the concerns you would have as a safety manager.

Your journal entry must be at least 500 words in length. No references or citations are necessary.

Part 4 (Toxicology)

Toxicants can be absorbed into the body by many routes. The main routes of absorption that are of concern in industry are inhalation, absorption thru the skin and oral consumption. It is possible for many organs to be affected when toxicants enter the body. Do you think toxicants absorbed by inhalation can affect organs other than the lungs? Explain your response and give an example.
