Solid Waste Management

Overview

Part 1 (Solid Waste Management)

This unit has presented the evolution and best practices for solid waste landfills.

For this assignment, create a PowerPoint presentation. Consider yourself as the local municipal solid waste landfill operator, and you are presenting to a community group to educate them on landfills. Your presentation should address the following topics:

  • evolution of waste disposal from dumps to landfills,
  • types of solid waste materials that are disposed of in landfills,
  • landfill location criteria,
  • landfill liner requirements,
  • landfill operational requirements,
  • air quality and groundwater monitoring requirements,
  • landfill closure, and
  • other items that would interest the audience.

The elements listed below must be incorporated into your PowerPoint presentation.

  • Your presentation should be a minimum of 15 slides in length, not counting the title slide and references slide.
  • To provide additional context and to amplify the information on each slide, utilize the speaker notes function to further explain the information on each slide.
  • Include a minimum of five images that support the content of the slides.
  • Use at least two scholarly resources to support your information, one of which can be the textbook and one of which can be a source from the CSU Online Library.
  • Feel free to be creative. You are allowed to utilize PowerPoint’s features to create charts, graphs, and other types of visual aids.

Please adhere to APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.

Part 2 (Solid Waste Management)

For this assignment, compose an essay that addresses the prompts below.

  • Examine the role of politics in successful municipal solid waste programs.
  • Explore the role of leadership for successful municipal solid waste programs.
  • Analyze financial costs of municipal solid waste management on human populations.
  • Provide a solution to the following scenario: A community wants to build a transfer station that has a capital cost of $3 million. To pay off the cost with equal annual payments over a 15-year period at an annual interest rate of 6.125%, what is the cost of each annual payment?

In your paper, limit the number of direct quotations that are taken from outside sources. The majority of your paper should be composed of your own thoughts and paraphrased information.

Make certain that your essay meets the criteria listed below.

  • Include a title page.
  • Provide an introduction.
  • Your paper must be at least three full pages in length, not counting the title page and references page.
  • Your references page should include at least two sources, one of which should be the course textbook and one of which should be a peer-reviewed source from the CSU Online Library.

Please adhere to APA Style when creating citations and references for this assignment.

Part 3 (Toxicology)

The assignment for this unit consists of 2 parts. Part A is an annotated bibliography and Part B is a Research Paper. Please read the instructions for each part and follow the directions carefully.

Part A:

As a safety manager, consider chemicals that you would likely find at a facility that can cause nephrotoxicity. Research three scientific journal articles that discuss research findings on these chemicals as they relate to nephrotoxicity.

Summarize each article and their research findings in your own words. Also, include in your summary what type of facility would this chemical be found and what type of control could be used to protect employees from the chemical. Credit will not be given for reiterating the abstract.

APA formatting must be implemented. Select three scientific research articles from the CSU library. Each article summary must be a minimum of 200 words.

Part B:

In the assigned reading for this unit, you learned about various chemicals that induce reproductive toxicity. Flame retardants are used in products such as household furniture, plastics, and electronic and electrical equipment. Flame retardants are supposed to increase safety by reducing the flammability of items. However brominated flame retardants can cause reproductive toxicity. Research a specific brominated flame retardant such as tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), tetrabromophthalic anhydride, dibromoneopentylglycol, or brominated styrene that can cause reproductive toxicity and apply it to the research paper as directed below.

Develop a research paper that includes the following:

  • Background information on the toxicant, its use, and routes of exposure,
  • the process by which this toxicant causes reproductive toxicity and the concentration of exposure,
  • briefly summarizing the reproductive system may be necessary to discuss how the toxicant causes reproductive toxicity, ways exposure to the toxicant might be limited, treated, and/or effects reversed, and
  • recent research findings (within the last five years) on this chemical.

The paper should be a minimum of two pages in length, not counting the title and reference pages, and written in APA format with proper in-text citations and references. The paper should utilize at least three credible sources that include at least one peer-reviewed journal article published within the last five years.

Part 4 (Toxicology)

Imagine that you are the head of the Safety department at a facility that produces electronics and handles beryllium. You are responsible for preparing a training seminar presentation for a group of managers at your facility. This training needs to be in depth and detailed as the managers are required to have a thorough understanding of the materials to be able to properly oversee and prevent hazards in their individual areas.

Prepare a PowerPoint presentation that discusses the following:

  • Discuss the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of beryllium.
  • Common routes of exposure and effects of beryllium.
  • Explain the bioaccumulation of metals as it affects ecology and humans.

Be sure to summarize information in your own words as much as possible because the managers at your facility are not scientists. Utilize at least four visual aids that directly correlate to your discussion to clarify information. Visual aids may be in the form of pictures, flow charts, tables, or diagrams. Include a minimum of two credible sources.

Your PowerPoint presentation should be at least seven slides in length and include speaker notes. The presentation will include a title and reference slide. The title and reference slides do not count toward the minimum requirement. All sources used will be properly cited and formatted in APA Style.
