Overview
The Case study and treatment Plan is on SSG James: 1. Case Description
James is a 34-year-old Hispanic American male, married, and the father of a 7-year-old son. He serves on active duty in the U.S. Army and currently holds the rank of Sergeant (SGT) after being administratively demoted from Staff Sergeant (SSG). James presented to counseling at his wife’s encouragement due to increasing emotional distress, persistent sadness, and frustration. He was fully oriented, cooperative, and engaged throughout the session. His affect was congruent with his reported mood of sadness and disappointment. No symptoms of psychosis, disorganized thought, or suicidal/homicidal ideation were noted.
2. Presenting Problem
James reports ongoing sadness, low mood, fatigue, confusion, and frustration that began after receiving disciplinary action during his deployment to Poland. He described feeling disrespected and betrayed when two soldiers under his command disobeyed orders, which ultimately led to his demotion by the Brigade Sergeant Major. He further experienced denials when attempting to reclass, transfer units, or pursue the recruiting pathway due to being flagged.
Additionally, James reports a decline in morale, increased irritability, and diminished self-esteem. He feels distressed by being mocked by peers and unsupported by his First Sergeant, whom he previously trusted. He seeks counseling to process feelings of injustice, cope with depressive symptoms, and manage the emotional impact of his demotion and career limitations.
