Psychology development MAJOR project Due 4/12/2026
Assignment Title: Development in Real Life Project — Tracing Development Through Everyday Experiences
Points: 200
Overview
Developmental psychology is most meaningful when we see it happening in real life. In this project, you will observe real behaviors across different developmental periods and connect them to concepts from the course. This assignment prioritizes authentic observations, personal reflection, and applied understanding.
Learning Objectives
By completing this project, you will:
- Apply developmental theories to real‑world observations.
- Accurately describe age‑related changes across cognitive, physical, emotional, and social domains.
- Analyze the roles of nature and nurture in development.
- Reflect on how developmental science informs everyday life.
Project Parts & Requirements
Part 1: Real‑World Developmental Snapshots (100 points)
Choose three distinct developmental periods from the list below:
- Prenatal/Infancy
- Early Childhood
- Middle Childhood
- Adolescence
- Emerging Adulthood
- Middle Adulthood
- Late Adulthood
For each chosen period: (you should have a separate individual for each of the selected developmental periods)
- Identify a real individual (no names). Briefly state your relationship/context (e.g., “my 4‑year‑old niece I see weekly”).
- Describe one observable behavior you have personally seen (be specific: what, where, how often).
- Explain using course textbook: Select one relevant concept/theory (e.g., attachment, executive function, puberty and brain development, information‑processing, socioemotional selectivity) and explain how it helps us understand the behavior.
- Reflect (short): Choose one prompt(a) How did this observation confirm/challenge your assumptions? (b) How might environment or culture influence this behavior? (c) How could development change this behavior over time?
Part 2: Nature & Nurture Analysis (50 points)
Select one of your individuals from Part 1 and respond:
Prompt: To what extent is this behavior influenced by biology, environment, or both?
Requirements:
- Identify one biological factor (e.g., brain development, genetics, hormones, aging).
- Identify one environmental factor (e.g., family, culture, school, peers, technology).
- Clearly connect both factors to Kail’s discussion of development and to the observed behavior.
Part 3: “What Development Taught Me” Reflection (50 points)
Write a 1–2-page reflection that addresses:
- Which developmental stage surprised you most—and why.
- One belief about development that changed.
- How this knowledge applies to your current or future life.
Use a personal voice (first person is encouraged). No outside citations are required beyond the textbook.
Submission Guidelines
- File type: Word (docx) or PDF.
- Format: Clear headings for Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. 5–7 total pages (flexible).
- Tone: Informal academic (clarity over polish).
- Privacy: Do not include names or identifiable details.
Academic Integrity & AI Use
This assignment requires personal observation and lived context. Generic, vague, or textbook‑only language (including AI‑generated text) will not meet the requirements. If you consult tools for grammar or idea‑prompting, you must:
- Write all content in your own words about your own observations.
- Ensure accuracy with course materials.
- Take full responsibility for originality and correctness.
Grading Rubric (200 points total)
Part 1: Developmental Snapshots (100 points)
- Three stages included (30 pts): All are clearly distinct and appropriate.
- Adequate = minor overlap/clarity issues; Needs improvement = missing/incorrect stages.
- Observation realism (40 pts): Clearly personal, specific, and contextual.
- Adequate = somewhat general; Needs improvement = vague/generic.
- Kail concept connection (30 pts): Accurate and well explained.
- Adequate = mostly accurate; Needs improvement = incorrect/missing.
Part 2: Nature & Nurture Analysis (50 points)
- Biological factor (15 pts): Clear and accurate.
- Environmental factor (15 pts): Clear and accurate.
- Integration with behavior (20 pts): Strong, explicit links to the observation and textbook.
Part 3: Final Reflection (50 points)
- Personal insight (20 pts): Deep, thoughtful analysis.
- Application of course ideas (20 pts): Clear connection to developmental concepts.
- Effort & organization (10 pts): Coherent, well‑structured submission.
Quick Grading Notes: Most criteria are binary (present/clear vs. missing/vague). Comment bank examples:
- “Great, specific real‑world example.”
- “Be more concrete about the behavior (who/what/where/how often).”
- “Nice textbook connection—add a sentence linking concept to behavior.”
Student Checklist (Use as a guide to assist in completing the project)
✅ Development in Real Life Project — Student Checklist
Before You Start
- I chose three distinct developmental periods.
- I identified real individuals I can observe (no names; include my relationship/context).
- I have access to textbook, 9th edition for concept connections.
Part 1 (for each of the 3 stages)
- I describe one specific observable behavior (what/where/how often).
- I connect the behavior to one Kail concept/theory and explain the link.
- I write a brief reflection (assumptions, environment/culture, or how it may change over time).
Part 2: Nature & Nurture
- I selected one of my individuals.
- I identified one biological factor and one environmental factor.
- I clearly linked both factors to Kail’s discussion and my observation.
Part 3: Reflection
- I wrote 1–2 pages in a personal voice.
- I noted the stage that surprised me, a belief that changed, and a life application.
Submission & Formatting
- My file is .docx or .pdf with clear headings (Part 1, Part 2, Part 3).
- I did not include names or identifiable details.
- My writing is original and based on my own observations.
Final Quick Scan
- Each part directly references textbook concepts where applicable.
- My examples are concrete and personal, not generic.
- I saved and uploaded the file to the correct Blackboard assignment drop box.
