In this milestone activity, you will use the information you've learned in this module to generate a research question that is scientifically sound, feasible, interesting, and ethical. While you may decide to change your research question as you move throughout the rest of the course, coming up with an idea now that you'll continue to explore the rest of the course will allow you to maximize your efficiency with regards to background literature searches, considerations of methodology, and analytical strategies.

Milestone Assessment 1

For this milestone assessment, you will develop a research question that specifically addresses a public health or social issue you have personally observed in your local community (town, campus, state, or country). Use local news, community-based reports, or federal data sources as part of your initial literature review. In doing so, you should draw on the information that has been covered in this module to ensure that your question is scientifically sound, quantifiable (no qualitative questions), feasible, interesting, and ethical.

The question is posed as a question at the top of the paper.

What do I want you to do?

To complete this assignment, you should do a search of the relevant scientific literature to see what is already known about your area of interest and what remains to be explored. This will require that you provide at least 2 paragraphs that explain your variables. For this you will need a minimum of 5 sources (at least 3 must be peer reviewed and the others can be federal or state data sources). As you gain a better understanding of the background information, you will ultimately be able to come to a specific research question. As you develop the question, you should make sure that you could test your question, that doing so would provide some scientific value and be of interest, and that answering your question would not violate any of the ethical principles.

In the ethics paragraph, you must reference a specific ethical standard (by number and name) from the current APA Ethics Code or a specific guideline from your university's IRB (Institutional Review Board) website that is most relevant to your proposed study. Describe how your design adheres to this standard.

Why do I want you to do it?

A major goal in this course is to have you become familiar with how research in psychology and other closely related fields is conducted. Being able to review the existing literature and develop your own sound research question is an important first step in the overall research process.

How do I want you to do it?

In terms of format, you should write out your question followed by a few paragraphs of text in which you address those issues mentioned above. The entire milestone should not be more than 2-3 pages of typed, double spaced 12 point font text with one inch margins.

A minimum of 5 references are required and 3 must be reviewed (preferably within the last 5-10 years).
