First; Observe a “situation” at work, school, or elsewhere and apply the following question “what is going on here?”. The site must be public, not private, and you should not instigate the interaction you observe. You should be able to identify a specific time and space, and you should only be an observer of what other people are doing—you should not be an active participant in the interaction you are observing. Second; to complete this exercise, answer these basic analytic questions: How do you define the situation: explain what is specific about that time and that space. How do the people in the situation frame ‘what is going on’? Again, be specific and describe what is evident about the specific time and space of the interaction for the participants in it. How do you “code” the social action in the situation? What labels are you applying to the time, space, and interactions going on there? How do the participant ‘code’ their own actions? Is there evidence of how the interactants label their own actions? |
