Movie: Boyz N the Hood Sociology Project

Overview

Project Part 1: Overview

Submit a brief overview of the film you have chosen for sociological analysis. This description will serve as the basis for the introduction (critical element I) and the identification of sociological issues (critical element II-A) for your final project (due in Module Seven).

Address the following:

  • Provide a brief overview of your selected film. Talk about why you chose the film and tell your audience a little about the setting, characters, and plot.
  • What are the major social issues in the film? How are they manifested?
  • What aspects of these issues and their portrayal do you think a sociological analysis will help illuminate?
  • What sorts of sociological questions about the film are you interested in examining in your project?

Project Part 2: Sociological View and Research

Select one of the major social issues in your film and address the following:

  • Identify the social phenomena influencing the social issue you selected, substantiating your identification(s) with course readings and an additional article.
  • Apply an appropriate key theoretical perspective to explain the relationship between the social phenomena and the social issue, detailing the appropriateness of the perspective chosen.
  • From the theories we have covered thus far in the course, identify one key classical sociological theory and one key contemporary sociological theory that help explain the relationship between the social phenomena and the social issue depicted in the film. Why are these theories appropriate in examining the relationship? What insight do they give into the relationship between the social issue and society?

Then locate two sociological articles of opposing perspectives related to the previously selected social issue and address the following:

  • Describe your selected two articles and outline the differing opinions of the researchers.
  • Identify the sociological theories that support the researchers' differing opinions, and explain how these theories support the opinions.
  • What inferences can you make about how the social issue is represented in the film using the identified social patterns, differing opinions, and supporting theories of the articles?

Keep in mind that your audience members are nonspecialists who may not be familiar with sociology. Adapt your analysis to this audience, explaining unfamiliar sociological terms so that nonspecialists can understand them.

Project Part 3: FINAL Overview (I'll record the podcast and use the project as my speaker notes)

Submit a podcast of your sociological analysis. Be sure to address Real-World Relevance and Conclusions, which have not yet been addressed in your milestones. You might also consider the theories covered in Modules Six and Seven as you complete, revise, and polish your final podcast. Combining the sections completed here with the information gathered and incorporating feedback received throughout the course, create a 10- to 15-minute podcast of your sociological analysis, including speaker notes. Your speaker notes are an informal document that provides captioning for your audio recording.

Your submission should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the critical elements of the final project. It should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout the course.
