| Table of Contents Page | List the 7 categories (race/ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, age, physical/mental ability). Rank them on your table of content order personal importance and relevance. How would you rank these seven categories in your life? Rank them from 1–7 with one being the most important and seven being the least important (each category should have a different number). |
| Page 1 | Family/Social Context: introduction about who you are. Provide a description of your family and the social context as you were growing up. Think about the following questions to guide your writing: What has been my social context? Who is in my family? Was I surrounded by people like myself, or was I/my family part of a minority group in my community? Did I grow up speaking the standard version of the language of my country? Did I live in a rural community, an urban neighborhood, or a suburb? Was I part of a large or small family? Describe any other factors that make up who you are today. |
| Pages 2 - 6+ | Explain: your 7 categories of “otherness” in ranking order (each one must be labeled in bold). Start by explaining your ranking of the categories. Then for each category, provide an examination of yourself in this category. Who is dominant/subordinate for each category? Are you a dominant or subordinate member of the group? If you are dominant, what advantages/privileges have you received as a result of your domination or membership in the group? If you are subordinate, what have you had to deal with as a result of being targeted or disadvantaged by others? Compare and contrast your life in these seven categories as “others” perceive you in our society. Remember we have multiple identities and can be both dominant and subordinate in these complexities of identity. Use the terms “dominant” and “subordinate” in your analysis for all categories. Include your life examples as you analyze each of the categories. Include references to (direct quotes) Tatum’s chapter on “Complexity of Identity” for each category to support your explanations. |
| Last Page | Write a concluding reflection detailing what you learned through this essay process that will help your development as a professional. State the implications of these findings to being a future professional in speech language pathology or other professional field. |
