Prompt:
What is the difference between development and globalisation?
Can they ever complement each other?
You should draw on examples from the readings, films and lectures.
Please note: you must cite each of the assigned readings in this paper.
We will grade on
i. evidence of reading;
ii. clarity of argument, and
iii. critiques/innovative perspectives you offer.
NOTES:
-- You must demonstrate you have read all the pieces for Weeks 1, 2 and 3.
-- Please include insights from the documentaries we have watched so far.
-- An A paper will not only include a reference to all the assigned readings, but it should also have an argument that is clear, coherent, and runs throughout the paper.
There are many ways to write a paper: some suggest an A paper mincludes a clear thesis statement/opening argument, and each paragraph contains an argument that backs up that thesis statement. If your argument is innovative and shows that you have processed the readings and are able to add your own critical analysis, that's a huge bonus and the paper will easily be in the "A" range.
FAQ:
Do I need to include all the readings in the paper?
Yes!
You should incorporate all of them into the paper. Remember that you don't need to go into a vast amount of detail for all of them - just a quick mention would work, i.e: "Some scholars are critical of the UN millennium development goals (e.g. AAA), for they argue XXX and YYY." In other words, you should cite every reading so we know that you've read it, but you don't necessarily need to summarise each reading, nor quote from every reading.
Should I discuss the documentaries we've watched so far?
Yes! Please feel free to draw on them to support your argument/commentary/ides in the paper
Can the paper be longer the 1500 words?
The paper should not be longer than 1500 words. If the word count is 1520, that's fine. I don't want a paper that is 1700 words.
How do I cite the readings?
Please use any referencing system you prefer (Harvard, MLA etc etc). Don't forget to include a separate Works Cited page which does not have to count towards the five pages!
I hope you enjoy writing this paper.
Nioshi and I will be available to talk about the paper during our office hours. We will also allocate extra office hours so that you can discuss the paper with us.
