Sociology Question

Analytic Essay #2 Assignment Instructions

Assignment Overview

In this assignment, you will analyze the economic strategy of a developing country of your choice and evaluate its effectiveness. Your task is to examine the specific development strategy pursued by your chosen country and its impact on both economic growth and societal issues such as inequality and poverty.

Essay Prompt

As discussed in the textbook and lecture, the extent to which a country is able to develop economically over time can be influenced by many factors. One of the most important determinants is the country’s domestic politics and the economic policies adopted by political actors, which often reflect ideological considerations about the role of the state versus the market. For this essay, choose a developing country and analyze the economic strategy it has pursued over time. In your response, consider the following:

  • Which strategy of development has the country primarily adopted (e.g., import substitution industrialization, export-oriented growth, trade liberalization, etc.)?
  • How has this strategy impacted the country’s overall economic growth?
  • What effects has it had on other aspects of society (e.g., inequality, poverty levels)?

Objective

  • To demonstrate your understanding of different economic development strategies.
  • To analyze the political and economic factors that have shaped the chosen country’s development path.
  • To assess the broader societal impacts of the country’s economic strategy, including its effects on inequality and poverty.
