Higginbotham and Andersen, articles seven and eleven discussion board:
Please respond to the following in paragraph form, providing an appropriate level of detail and specificity. Single sentence replies are insufficient. Spelling, grammar, and punctuation count. Proofread your work prior to posting. Responses should be a minimum of six well-developed paragraphs.
Article seven (The First Americans…):
- How have Native American communities managed to survive since the coming of Europeans to North America? Describe the relationship between the United States government and Native American communities. Have the methods employed by the United States government in dealing with Native American communities been static or have they evolved? Be specific and detailed.
Article eleven (We’re Honoring You, Dude):
- The authors identify three myths surrounding the use of Native American mascots. Reiterate and discuss them, being specific and detailed.
- Were sports teams to adopt stereotyped mascots about other groups (Jewish people, women, African Americans, Asians, or others, what might be the public reaction? (Adapted from discussion question number two, page 101.) Be specific and detailed.
- Why is it important, for example, that the Cleveland Indians baseball team was renamed? They are now called the Guardians (One might ask what they are guarding: Is it white supremacy? Surely they are not guarding the rights and dignity of Native People!). The Washington Commanders of the NFL were called The Redskins until recently. If you were a twelve or thirteen year old Native kid coming into contact with media images portraying your people as buffoons and savages what impact might it have on your emerging sense of self and your worldview? Specifically, can a serious human being reasonably claim such mascots honor Native people? Have you ever seen the old Cleveland Indians mascot, Wahoo Sam?
Wahoo Sam (A dignified presentation?)
Please label and number your responses but submit them as a single discussion board post.
