Overview
For the first milestone of your final project, you will submit the Crime and Violence Issue Worksheet to set the foundation for your final project. Keep in mind that your perspective on this crime and violence issue may evolve or become more refined throughout the process of researching and receiving feedback in the course. Consider Milestone One as an opportunity to propose a position and then see it take shape over the duration of the course.
Note: Although you will be refining and narrowing your chosen issue, changing to another crime and violence issue entirely cannot be done after Milestone One without instructor approval.
Using the worksheet provided, you will address the following:
- Choose your crime and violence issue, and provide a brief (1–2 sentences) overview. Your perspective on this crime and violence issue may evolve or become more refined throughout the process of receiving feedback from your instructor, reading the material in each module, and by way of analysis of course materials and your research of the issue.
- Introduce your social advocacy group (of your own creation), briefly explaining the work that the group does related to the chosen social issue and how the social issue aligns with the group’s goals.
- Begin researching and summarizing sources relevant to the crime and violence issue.
- Develop a brief preliminary position statement explaining your position on the social issue, as research assistant for your social advocacy group.
- From this initial analysis, you will begin to uncover prevalent stereotypes regarding your issue.
- You will also uncover other questions to explore that will guide further development of the final position statement.
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
- Provide a brief overview of the issue.
- Explain the focus of the position paper and how it aligns with the ultimate goal of the social advocacy group.
- Briefly explain the evidence that will be used in the analysis of the issue.
- Develop a statement that communicates the position of the social advocacy group.
- Identify prevalent stereotypes regarding the issue. (Note: In your final project, you will perform a deeper analysis of the stereotypes, but in this milestone, you will just begin to take note of them and their impact on your issue.)
- Communicate a preliminary position on the crime and violence issue supported by findings from the analysis.
