Overview
Description of task(s) to be completed: You are required to write a piece of individual coursework addressing one of the questions below. Your answer may be based around material presented during the module but should be complimented with wider research from relevant sources. Your response should be no longer than 2000 words, less titles and references.
Answer ONE of the following questions (note, there are three questions to choose between). Your answer should consider how SE is applied to complex defence or national infrastructure systems in general:
1.It is often asserted that the problems with a system development project begin when the developers attempt to integrate the component elements and sub-systems of the system. Discuss the factors that impact successful integration and the extent to which the application of systems engineering integration methods, can alleviate this problem. Your answer should include consideration of the question “do Model Base SE approach to the SoI Requirements and Architecture enable better integration?”
2.There are several methods that can be used to perform verification of the System of Interest (SoI), some of which have been introduced in the module teaching materials. Discuss the applicability of verification methods for the verification of a SoI. In particular, consider the limitations and affordances of the various possible verification methods and the assumptions associated with their use. You answer should include considerations of how verification planning and conduct can benefit from a Model Base SE approach to the SoI Requirements and Architecture.
3.The difference between the terms Verification and Validation is generally agreed upon across the SE community. However, the difference in abstraction between demonstrating that a SoI meets its agreed system requirements and demonstrating that the resulting deployed system satisfies the Stakeholders Needs leads to different interpretations of how and when a system is Validated. Discuss the different perspectives on Validation and how this relates to factors such as operating domain, technology, commercial relationships, life cycle approach, etc. From this, discuss the current and future role for Validation in SE practice.
